Centered Ground in Carlsbad: Comprehensive Care Centered Ground in Carlsbad: Comprehensive Care

In 2014, Centered Ground started offering radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO-DBT), establishing itself as the first entity in Southern California to introduce this transformative therapy. Led by Dr. Angela Klein, who was among the initial intensively trained U.S. participants under the guidance of RO-DBT developer Dr. Thomas Lynch, Centered Ground stands as the only fully trained program in the San Diego area. RO-DBT serves as the most recent adaptation of traditional DBT, targeted at individuals dealing with patterns of excessive self-control and emotional restraint, including conditions like restrictive eating disorders (for example, anorexia nervosa), widespread anxiety disorders, and long-term depression. This approach supplies psychoeducational resources and techniques to explore the underlying neurological factors of these patterns, fostering improved self-insight, kindness toward oneself, and stronger relational connections. Built upon Dr. Thomas Lynch's 20 years of studies, the therapy features weekly two-hour skills classes combined with one-on-one sessions. Furthermore, in 2018, Mia Najor joined the staff following her intensive training.

Mission

In 2014, Centered Ground launched services in radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO-DBT), pioneering this innovative method as the initial provider in Southern California. Under the guidance of Dr. Angela Klein, a member of the pioneering intensively trained U.S. group led by RO-DBT creator Dr. Thomas Lynch, Centered Ground continues to be the sole thoroughly trained program in the San Diego region. RO-DBT represents the latest evolution of standard DBT, designed for those facing challenges with overly restrained behaviors and suppressed emotions, such as restrictive eating disorders (like anorexia nervosa), persistent anxiety issues, and ongoing depression. This therapy delivers education and strategies to tackle the core brain mechanisms driving these behaviors, promoting enhanced self-awareness, empathy, and meaningful interpersonal bonds. Rooted in Dr. Thomas Lynch's two decades of research, the program includes weekly two-hour skills sessions along with individual meetings. Additionally, in 2018, Mia Najor became part of the team after completing intensive training.

Personal Statements

Innovative Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Radical Openness

In 2014, Centered Ground introduced radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO-DBT), becoming the trailblazer in Southern California for this forward-thinking treatment. Directed by Dr. Angela Klein, who participated in the first intensively trained U.S. cohort overseen by RO-DBT originator Dr. Thomas Lynch, Centered Ground is still the exclusive fully trained program in the San Diego vicinity. RO-DBT is the newest version of conventional DBT, aimed at people experiencing issues with overly controlled behaviors and emotional suppression, such as restrictive eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa), ongoing anxiety conditions, and persistent depression. This therapy offers educational insights and tools to examine the fundamental neurobiological aspects of these tendencies, encouraging greater self-knowledge, self-compassion, and fulfilling relationships. Drawing from Dr. Thomas Lynch's two decades of investigation, the program incorporates weekly two-hour skills training along with personalized sessions. Moreover, in 2018, Mia Najor integrated into the group after finishing her intensive preparation.

Mindfulness and DBT Approaches for Eating Disorders and Body Image

Centered Ground excels in DBT-informed interventions for issues related to disordered eating and body perception, encompassing individual counseling, support calls, and group skills development. This method is backed by research demonstrating its success, particularly for binge eating and bulimia nervosa, with contributions from studies by Dr. Klein (Klein, Skinner, & Hawley, 2012; 2013). It promotes a welcoming, judgment-free attitude toward food and eating habits, enhancing empathy and releasing feelings of guilt and shame. Skills instruction is customized based on individual needs and may last from 6 months for topics like mindfulness, emotion management, and coping with distress, up to 30 weeks for radical openness. Support calls between appointments assist in applying concepts to everyday challenges and urges. To refine this strategy, starting in 2007, Dr. Klein collaborated with Dr. Debra Safer at Stanford, a key figure in researching DBT adaptations for eating disorders. Dr. Klein is the only specialist offering this evidence-based protocol in the wider San Diego area. Her publication, 'Mindful Eating from the Dialectical Perspective: Research and Application,' is accessible via Routledge and Amazon.

DBT Programs for Adults and Adolescents

Centered Ground delivers comprehensive standard DBT services for both adults and teens, featuring individual therapy, group skills sessions, and coaching support. It is the only complete DBT provider in North County San Diego north of Del Mar. The DBT program for teens and families addresses skills in a group setting with proven effectiveness for managing high emotional reactivity and impulsive actions, covering areas such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, behavioral principles, validation, and interpersonal skills. For adults, DBT skills training includes mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Dr. Klein has practiced DBT since 2004, with expertise encompassing DBT for substance use and modifications to make it more practical in daily life, including her role as the primary therapist in Dr. Kim Gratz's randomized study on emotion regulation group therapy for self-injury (Gratz, Tull, & Levy, 2014). She has also led and created various DBT-based initiatives in diverse environments, such as university counseling services and intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization programs.
